Dr Tawfik graduated from the University of Al-Mustanseryah in Baghdad, Iraq with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery in 1994. He went on to complete his surgical training at several hospitals in Iraq before relocating to Australia, and was certified by the Australian Medical Council in 2005. He then worked at Peninsula Health and the Royal Melbourne Hospital in surgical and emergency medicine which included a year in the Emergency Department at Frankston Hospital prior to joining the Anatomical Pathology training program.

From 2008 - 2013 Dr Tawfik trained in Anatomical Pathology at the Royal Women's Hospital, St Vincent's Hospital and Dorevitch Pathology, Frankston.

Dr Tawfik received a Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia in 2013 and joined St John of God Pathology, Geelong shortly after as a Consultant Anatomical Pathologist. He was subsequently appointed Deputy Director of Anatomical Pathology in 2016.

Dr Tawfik joined Melbourne Pathology in December 2018 as a Histopathologist. He has special interests in gastrointestinal and lymphoma pathology.
