Dr Knox completed his undergraduate studies at the University of New South Wales. During his early years as a Medical Registrar he obtained a Diploma of Tropical Medicine in Liverpool UK, and volunteered intermittently with Medecins Sans Frontiers, initially in Angola, and later Sudan. He has also spent short periods assisting in medical projects in the Indian Himalayas and the Peruvian Amazon.

He has worked as Infectious Diseases Registrar at Monash Medical Centre and the Victorian Infectious Disease Service at Royal Melbourne Hospital; and was Microbiology Registrar at the Victorian Infectious Disease Reference Laboratory in 2011 and at the Austin Hospital in 2012.
Dr Knox joined Melbourne Pathology in 2013 as a Microbiology Registrar and became a Medical Microbiologist in September 2014. He is also a specialist Infectious Diseases Physician. With an interest in the application of emerging technology in the Microbiology laboratory, he is currently researching new approaches to the detection of multi-resistant bacteria. Dr Knox also holds an honorary research appointment at Swinburne University.
