After an RMIT university degree in Bachelor of Applied Science in Medical Laboratory Science, Dr Symes graduated from The University of Melbourne with a Bachelor of Science First Class Honours, where she was awarded the Deans Award. She then went on to complete a Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery with Honours and in her final year was awarded the Edgar Rouse Prize.

Dr Symes did her training for Anatomical Pathology in Melbourne at the Austin Hospital, the Mercy Hospital for Women, The Royal Women's and Children's Hospitals and St John of God Pathology. She became a fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists (Anatomical Pathology) in 2011.

Dr. Symes maintains an active involvement in teaching, with a senior clinical lecturer position at Deakin University, Waurn Ponds.

Dr. Symes joined Melbourne Pathology in August 2016 as a Histopathologist, based at our Geelong laboratory. Her main areas of interest are gastrointestinal, placental and urological pathology.
