A graduate of the University of Manchester, United Kingdom, Dr Surtees completed a Bachelor of Science in 1969 and went on to complete a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) with honours in 1972.

After working as a Junior House Officer at the University Hospital of South Manchester, Dr Surtees moved to Australia and worked as a General Practitioner in Dandenong, Victoria.

From 1974 - 1977, Dr Surtees was a NH & MRC Postgraduate Research Scholar in the Department of Pathology at the University of Melbourne, before completing her PhD in 1979.

She was appointed Registrar at the Queen Victoria and Royal Melbourne Hospitals before returning to the UK for a short time as Lecturer in Human Morphology. Dr Surtees returned to Melbourne in 1982 and was appointed Senior Lecturer in Pathology at RMIT.

In 1989, Dr Surtees became a Consultant Pathologist at the Victorian Cytology Service, before taking up the position of Head of Cytopathology at Dorevitch Pathology in 2000.

Dr Surtees joined Melbourne Pathology as a Cytopathologist in early 2012.

In 2017, Dr Surtees was awarded honorary life membership to the Australian Society of Cytology for distinguished service to Cytology.
