After graduating from the University of Melbourne, Royal Melbourne Hospital Clinical School in 1970, Dr Federman spent his intern year at Royal Melbourne Hospital. He moved to the Alfred Hospital in 1972 for general medical and cardiology training.

In 1977 he commenced a two- year cardiology fellowship at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, USA. He returned to the Alfred Hospital as a full-time Cardiologist in 1979 and remained there for 32 years until the end of 2011. During this time he was involved in acute and outpatient clinical care, cardiac catheterisation and coronary intervention. Dr Federman has held a number of positions at the Alfred Hospital including Head of Echocardiography from 1981 - 2011, Foundation Cardiologist at the Cardiac Transplant Unit from 1989 - 1991 and Head of Non-invasive Cardiac Services from 1995 - 2011. He was also a Member of the Alfred Hospital Quality Assurance Committee and Resuscitation Committee from 1997 - 2006.

Dr Federman was Senior Examiner for the Diploma of Diagnostic Ultrasound in Echocardiography from 1989 - 2006. He has had several roles in the Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand including Secretary, Victorian representative of the Working Group in Echocardiography from 1985 - 1993 and Chairman of the Interventional Working Group in 1993.
