Information for clinicians

Please note: we currently cannot accept patients with a referral for suspected coronavirus (COVID-19) at our collection centres. Patients will be referred back to their treating doctor for advice.

Respiratory PCR collections
As the symptoms will be similar between COVID-19 and other respiratory illnesses and the outcome of the testing cannot be assumed at presentation, we have also moved to decline all respiratory PCR swab collections at our collection centres.

Testing for COVID-19

Any suspected coronavirus (COVID-19) case should meet the clinical and epidemiological criteria as specified by the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS).

Melbourne Pathology will send suspected coronavirus specimens to the Victorian Infectious Diseases Reference Laboratory (VIDRL) to undertake confirmatory testing for COVID-19.

For COVID-19 collections, please use a blue-topped Transwab. Take a throat swab first and then use the THE SAME SWAB to take a nasopharyngeal swab.
